Welcome back, everyone. I'm back at work after being off for 40 something days- I honestly lost track. It's been great, though. Being a barista, you don't realize how much you miss some of your regulars until it's been almost two months. With that being said, researching a story for today was a task. I apologize in advance; this is a super short story. I'm trying to remember how to have a routine again, and I'm struggling.
Let's get to it. While researching my last story about the Green Man, I came across another story about a green man. This is the legend of Green Man's Tunnel in Piney Fork South Park Township, Pennsylvania, outside of Pittsburgh. The tunnel was build in 1924 but was soon abandoned in 1962 because of the multiple deaths linked to the tunnel.
(Source: Roaptrippers) On August 4 of 1969, a couple decided to investigate the tunnel. It seems as though the area had always been a spooky location at people would go to at night. In all of the articles that I read, they say teenagers would frequent the location looking for a scare. Why always teens? As someone who has explored Zombie Road and the Seven Gates of Hell this year, I'll tell you it's not just the teens looking to get scared—just saying. I also just drank some cold brew, which was a bad idea- I tend to ramble. Sorry. Anyway, couple, tunnel, middle of nowhere, go! They decide to drive through the tunnel because you could then. The tunnel has since been cemented over, which kills me. Thrillseekers, please, when we find cool abandoned spooky places, don't do stupid shit to attract enough attention to get the site cemented closed. Now we all can't drive through the tunnel and have our car breakdown because, you know, ghosts. So they are driving along in this creepy abandoned tunnel, and they come to a bend in the path, and they hear a train. The train sounds like it is rushing towards them, they can hear the wheels screeching against the rails and then- nothing. They weren't the only people to experience the phantom train. I wonder what happens now that the tunnel is blocked off. No more ghost train? Another story about this area involves a family in the 1930s. The father murdered his wife and child with a hatchet near the tunnel, and that was all I could find. I saw a lot of strange stories from around Pittsburg, but I don't think they were near the tunnel, or near enough to include in this post. There have also been multiple suicides on the property. Legends have it that people would step out in front of the tunnel into a racing train. Could you imagine seeing that? I can't. Now for the main story linked to the location, the Green Man himself- Raymond Robinson. He was born in 1910 and suffered a terrible accident when he was nine years old. He was on a trolly and was dared to climb to the top of the trolly. He unfortunately, grabbed the cabled to pull himself up and was met with 22,000 volts of electricity. He survived the accident but suffered several injuries. His entire body was burned beyond recognition. His left arm, the one he grabbed the cable with, had to be amputated at the elbow. His nose and eyes were melted off, and his mouth became swollen and disfigured. He lived with his mother until her death. He made rugs and belts during the day, keeping his distance from people because of fear. He would venture out after dark when most people were in their homes. He would stroll along the State Route 351 on a paved path. Though he tried to avoid people rumor got around about his late-night walks and townsfolk would come to visit him. It was said he would pose for pictures in exchange for beer or cigarettes. Everyone who met him said he was kind and he would chat with you.
(Source: Wiki) The majority of people came to see him in 1960, and the rural area experienced more traffic than it had ever seen. Besides the not so nice nickname, No-face Charlie, especially when his name is Raymond, everyone was friendly with him. Locals said they would bring him beer until his death on June 11, 1985, at the age of 74.
(Source: HistoryDaily) After his death, people started to say that he still could be seen walking the same road. The legend goes that if you drive out there and turn off your car and call out to the Green Man, he'll come. A man will appear before your car with green skin and no face. If he touches your car, you will find yourself having trouble starting it again. I'm sorry, but then what? You go out in the middle of nowhere, and to make it extra spooky, its probably after midnight. You call out to this spirit who will cause your car to break down for what purpose? Now you're scared shitless, and you are stuck. I don't get it. Then again, I did the Seven Gates of Hell. I am all for seeing if something is real, but when it is supposed to trap you somewhere, I'm not down. There are still serial killers out there. Maybe I'm too paranoid, but what do you think? Would you try to contact Raymond as he haunted the same path he walked every day of his life? One more thing I almost forgot to mention; his skin isn't actually green. After the accident, his skin became so pale that other colors reflect off of it. Many people said he would wear a green shirt, and it would glow off of his skin at night. There is a story based on the Green Man called Route 351, but I couldn't find it. If you can find the film, please share it. Anyway, that is all I have for today. Don't forget to subscribe and tell your friends. -Tye
